Dr. Ann Little will present at the Spring 2017 Public Land History Center American West Program. Dr. Little, of the Colorado State University History Department, will be speaking about her book: The Many Captivities of Esther Wheelwright. Yale University Press published this work in 2016 to a wealth of positive reviews from the academic community.

Dr. Ann Little and the story of Esther Wheelwright

Dr. Little’s work is particularly notable for highlighting the story of a woman about whom the historical record might have been nearly blank. By innovatively reading her sources against the grain and leveraging interdisciplinary sources and methods, Little uncovers important insights into the community of Ursuline nuns over whom Wheelwright presided as mother superior. Her presentation will highlight the cultural, environmental, and political continuities that linked the frontiers of the colonial northeast to the Trans-Missippi West.

Dr. Ann Little’s notable accomplishments

Dr. Little is the author of several books about the American colonial period, including her 2007 work, Abraham in Arms: War and Gender in Colonial New England, as well as several scholarly articles in leading scholarly and professional journals. She is a celebrated historian at the national level.

Additionally, Dr. Little is the founder of the well-known blog, Historiann: History and Sexual Politics, 1492 to Present, and maintains an active presence on social media, notably Twitter, as a means of engaging an online audience with scholarly debate and commentary in the digital public square.
